Why the 2D-converted 3D photo cystal doesn't show my hair in the back?

People sometimes ask questions when they received 3D photo crystal from vendor, that they did not see their “back” image in the crystal. You have to understand how exacted 2d converting to 3d (or 2 1/2D) image works to figure out why this is happening.

Basically, when you submit your 2d photo and have someone make “3d” image for you inside a crystal block, the engineer or designer who got your picture will process the 2d image in a special software, which can “imagine” the sides (ear, cheek, neck etc) based what’s appear on front. The software can not image what’s in the back, because it is totally black spot in 2d picture and no information is given. After the guess work is done, the software can convert it into machine engravable file to send in subsurface engraving machine, and you will see a 3d image inside the crystal block.

During the 2d to “3d” conversion process, sometimes the designer or engineer has to reject software suggested side image, if the designer think the “guess work” of software does not make sense or is far off. The designer may need to do some manual correction based on 2d imaged submitted and then input into laser engraving machine.
